GitHub Changes Its Management Structure After the Resignation of the General Director

  • Thomas Dohmke remains at GitHub to become a founding member of a startup.
  • GitHub becomes part of the CoreAI team at Microsoft.
  • Competition with Google and Cursor is increasing in the AI tools market.

This is reported by TechCrunch, The Verge.

On August 11, 2025, GitHub's General Director Thomas Dohmke announced his resignation. He will remain with the company until the end of the year, after which he plans to return to being a startup founder. Dohmke has led GitHub for nearly four years.

Along with the announcement, Microsoft is not appointing a new general director, and GitHub will now be part of the CoreAI team. Previously, GitHub functioned as a separate company after being acquired by Microsoft in 2018 for $7.5 billion.

In his blog, Dohmke noted that GitHub achieved significant successes, including over 1 billion repositories and 150 million developers. However, the company is facing increased competition from companies like Google and Cursor in the field of AI tools.

Microsoft plans to integrate GitHub into its new engineering group, CoreAI, which is led by former Meta executive Jay Parikh. This indicates a change in management and strategy for GitHub in the context of growing competition in the technology market.
