After the water advisory, residents of New Jersey remain without water

  • Currently, 200,000 residents of New Jersey are under a boil water advisory.
  • The advisory has been in effect for 30 days due to water supply issues in Paterson.
  • For residents, free bottled water and portable toilets have been provided.

The water advisory, which was issued last week in one of the major cities of northern New Jersey, continues to create problems for residents. As of Monday, nearly 200,000 consumers remain under a boil water advisory, issued by the Passaic Valley Water Commission.

The advisory has been in effect since Friday for the 30-day water supply issue in Paterson, the third-largest city in the state. The advisory applies not only to Paterson but also to three neighboring smaller municipalities. Residents are advised not to fill large containers, not to flush toilets, and not to open hydrants until Friday.

In areas where there is no water supply, portable showers and toilets have been set up. The commission is also providing free bottled water. It was initially planned that the water supply would be restored by the end of the week, but the repairmen were unable to isolate the site of the advisory, as well as the necessary special pipes for the restoration.

The boil water advisory will remain in effect until the water system is restored and tests for bacteria are conducted. Mayor of Paterson Andre Sayegh and other officials plan to provide updated information on the repair on Monday.

"After the restoration of water, we will need to conduct testing and priming of the system, so it may take another day after the restoration of water, before the advisory is lifted," said Jim Mueller, executive director of the Passaic Valley Water Commission.
