Europe is suffering from heatwaves and forest fires

  • The temperature in Europe has reached 43°C, triggering fires.
  • France and Spain are under a red alert due to the heat.
  • Climate change is contributing to an increase in forest fires in the region.

After a period of unseasonably cool weather, central and eastern Europe is once again facing a new wave of heat, especially as hot air from southern and southeastern Europe is flowing into the northern regions. Temperatures in some areas have already reached 43°C, resulting in numerous forest fires and evacuations.

According to forecasts, in Spain and Portugal, temperatures could rise to 44°C. Regional authorities in Spain are reporting serious difficulties in combating the fires, which are affecting cultural heritage sites, such as the ancient Roman site of the gold mine Las Médulas. Here, hundreds of people have already been evacuated.

In France, where a red alert has already been declared due to the heat, record temperatures have also been recorded at 42°C. Authorities have restricted access to certain areas due to the increased risk of fires, especially under conditions of strong winds and dry ground.

In southern Europe, including Italy, temperatures are also exceeding 40°C, creating a situation with forest fires. In Greece and Turkey, fires are also ongoing, threatening populated areas.

Experts note that climate change is causing increasingly extreme weather conditions, which increases the risk of such disasters occurring.
