In Winston-Salem, North Carolina, 53-year-old auto racer Robby Brewer died following a medical incident during the race. He was participating in a 20-lap race of the Sportsman series on the short track at Bowman Gray Stadium, when his car crashed into the wall, stopping near the starting line.
Track workers quickly removed the car to pull Brewer out, after which he was taken to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, where he died. Details about the cause of the medical incident are not being disclosed.
Officials from the track expressed their condolences, stating that Brewer was a talented driver, respected by his peers. He began his career on the track in 1990, making nearly 260 starts in the Sportsman series, and won the championship in 2011.
Brother Brewer, fellow racer Brad Lewis, noted that Brewer was like an older brother to him, and promised to honor his memory throughout the season.
