Senators acquire land for a new arena in LeBreton Flats
- Senators have signed an agreement to purchase 11 acres of land.
- The new arena will be located closer to the center of Ottawa.
- They plan to build over 2000 new residential units.
The group Capital Sports Development Inc., which represents Ottawa Senators, has signed an agreement with the National Capital Commission (NCC) for the purchase of 11 acres of land in LeBreton Flats. This area will be used for the construction of a multi-purpose arena, which will be located closer to the city center than the current Canadian Tire Centre, which is situated 30 minutes west of downtown Ottawa.
Senators President Cyril Leeder stated that the agreement is an important step in realizing the team's plans. "We are pleased to reach an agreement with the NCC to move forward in this process. There are still many hurdles to overcome, and we look forward to collaborating with the NCC and other interested parties," he said.
NCC General Director Tobi Nussbaum emphasized that the new event center will become an attractive place for residents and visitors, and will also stimulate the development of LeBreton Flats. As part of this project, they plan to build over 2000 new residential units, as well as new retail and commercial spaces.
This agreement is a continuation of a previous agreement reached last fall, which was the first step towards the creation of a new arena. Leeder also noted that after the agreement is finalized, they do not expect an immediate start to construction, as the upcoming stages include zoning planning, design, and clearing of the land.
