Adidas Distanced Itself from the Use of Indigenous Design

  • Adidas distanced itself from the use of indigenous design in new footwear.
  • The President of Mexico emphasized the importance of protecting intellectual property.
  • Mexican legislation protects the cultural heritage of indigenous peoples.

The German sports footwear manufacturer Adidas faced backlash after President of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum revealed the company had used leather shoes "Oaxaca Slip-On". This footwear design, developed by designer Uilly Chavarria, was inspired by traditional sandals "huaraches", worn by indigenous residents of the village of Yalalag in the state of Oaxaca. However, these communities were not involved in the production.

In its statement, Adidas noted: "We value the cultural diversity of indigenous peoples in Mexico and the importance of their heritage." The company also promised to establish a serious dialogue with the residents of Yalalag.

President Sheinbaum characterized this situation as "unacceptable cultural appropriation", adding that large companies exploit products, ideas, and designs of indigenous peoples. The governor of Oaxaca, Salomón Jara, stated that "huaraches from Yalalag are part of the cultural heritage of this community, a tradition that is passed down from generation to generation".

In 2022, a legislative initiative was adopted in Mexico that protects the intellectual and cultural property of indigenous and Afro-Mexican peoples. Improper use of such elements can lead to fines or legal action.

Chavarria, former vice-president of design at Calvin Klein, expressed regret over the fact that the footwear was presented without close cooperation with the Oaxacan community. He noted that his intention was to honor the cultural and artistic heritage of Oaxaca.
