Reddit Restricts Access to Internet Archive to Protect Data

  • Reddit restricts access to IA due to misuse by AI companies.
  • IA can no longer archive details of Reddit posts.
  • The company plans to establish licensing agreements with AI companies.

This was reported by Ars Technica, The Verge.

Reddit has begun blocking access to the Internet Archive (IA) for its data, after discovering that some AI companies are violating the platform's policies and misusing the Wayback Machine archive to collect information. With the new restrictions, IA can no longer index details of posts, comments, or user profiles of Reddit users, but can still archive titles and popular posts on the main page.

Reddit spokesperson, Tim Ratshmidt, noted that the company is aware of instances when AI companies violate the platform's policies. He also emphasized that until IA can ensure the confidentiality of its users' data, Reddit will restrict access to its data.

The changes began to take effect on August 11, 2025. Reddit already has experience limiting access to data for AI companies, including licensing agreements with companies like Google and OpenAI, and is looking forward to future revenue agreements.

The Internet Archive has not provided comments regarding the new restrictions and their impact on the archive as a publicly accessible resource.
