The Brazilian police reported that the result of the shooting at the women's water polo match in the junior world championship was not a shooting incident between China and Canada in the city of Salvador, which did not result in injuries.

China won by a score of 12-8 on the weekend – on the first day of the tournament. However, during the game, the players temporarily left the field, lay on the ground, and hid behind a small barrier after they heard gunshots. At the moment of the incident, China was leading 3-2.

"The match was stopped approximately on the wave. Our team saw that the police was dealing with the situation," said Marco Antonio Lemos, head of the Brazilian Water Sports Federation, in a statement.

The police stated that the shots were the result of a conflict with a suspected local criminal who was trying to escape from the police. Details were not disclosed.

Viewers were informed about the incident after the game was resumed.

Brazil is hosting 16 teams for the first time in this tournament.
