Trump Deploys National Guard in Washington to Combat Crime
- Trump is deploying 800 members of the National Guard in Washington.
- The troops will perform administrative and logistical tasks.
- The directive anticipates the possibility of recruiting active-duty military personnel as needed.
Washington (AP) — President Donald Trump announced the deployment of 800 members of the National Guard to support law enforcement agencies in combating crime in Washington. However, on the streets of the city, only 100-200 troops will be present at a time, according to information from the Army.
This directive, issued on Monday, is yet another example of how Trump utilizes the National Guard to support immigration control and combat crime, regardless of the restrictions on local and state officials.
How the Deployment of the National Guard in Washington Will Work
The National Guard will be deployed according to statute 32, which gives it the ability to perform law enforcement functions in the capital, although this is not the primary plan at the moment. The troops will carry out various tasks, including administrative and logistical support for law enforcement.
In addition, in Washington, nearly 500 federal law enforcement officials from various agencies, such as the FBI and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, will be working.
Trump emphasized that troops will remain in Washington until they determine that the situation with law and order has improved. He also added that, if necessary, additional military units may be called in.
Previous Military Deployments by Trump in Los Angeles
This move comes after Trump earlier deployed the National Guard and naval vessels in Los Angeles to protect federal buildings and assist in ongoing immigration raids. While the governor of California and local officials considered this operation unnecessary, Trump insisted on its necessity.
Trump's Use of the National Guard During His First Term
This is not the first instance where Trump has utilized federal forces in Washington. In 2020, he also deployed the National Guard during protests following the killing of George Floyd, which led to significant criticism regarding the militarization of law enforcement.
Critics argue that such actions by Trump may indicate his penchant for politicizing military units in domestic affairs.
