CAIRO — Paramilitary forces of Sudan's Rapid Support Forces carried out attacks on Monday at a camp for refugees, which is suffering from hunger, not far from El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, resulting in the deaths of 40 people, local human rights groups report.
The "Emergency Response Services" group, which operates in the Abu Shouk camp for refugees, stated in a report on Facebook that the RSF, which is fighting against the Sudanese army, attacked parts of the camp, aiming to target civilians in their homes. They also reported on 19 injured.
The Abu Shouk camp, located not far from El Fasher, hosts nearly 450,000 refugees and has repeatedly faced attacks during the war. The Sudanese army controls El Fasher, despite the ongoing attacks by the RSF.
Humanitarian committees in El Fasher confirmed the attacks, stating on Facebook that the scene reflects horrific violations of the rights of innocent people. This group consists of local activists.
The civil war in Sudan erupted in April 2023 in the capital Khartoum and has spread across the country due to escalating tensions between the RSF and the army. As a result of the fighting, over 40,000 people have been killed, and up to 12 million individuals have been forced to leave their homes, while many are threatened by hunger. The Abu Shouk camp is one of two camps facing severe conditions of hunger, according to humanitarian organizations.
The Sudanese army stated that on Monday there was fighting with RSF fighters in El Fasher, which began around 6 AM and ended in the afternoon. They claim to have repelled a significant attack from several directions, inflicting substantial losses on the opponent.
The governor of Darfur, Mini Arko Minawi, stated on Facebook that El Fasher "defeated those who betrayed their land" in connection with the fighting with the RSF. Meanwhile, in North Darfur, the RSF accuses the displaced of over 3,000 families from 66 villages due to the fighting since the beginning of September.
