Trump appoints new head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics
- E.J. Antonini has been appointed the new BLS commissioner following the dismissal of Makentfer.
- Trump accused the previous commissioner of manipulating data.
- Economists express concern about the recorded decline in trust in the BLS.
President Donald Trump on Monday appointed a new commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). He appointed economist E.J. Antonini, who works at the conservative analytical center. This appointment came after the dismissal of the previous commissioner, Eric Makentfer, whom Trump accused of manipulating data on job placements.
Trump stated that Antonini should ensure the timeliness and accuracy of the statistical data published by the BLS. The dismissal of Makentfer was a consequence of the controversy surrounding the job placement statistics for July, which showed disappointing results.
Experts expressed concern that changes in leadership could undermine trust in the BLS, as its data play an important role in shaping policy and business decisions. Some economists warned that budget cuts could undermine the reliability of the agency.
