Evaluating Joe Milton as a Potential Backup in the Cowboys
- Joe Milton demonstrates potential, but needs development.
- Will Grier is also competing for the backup quarterback position.
- The team's trainer emphasizes the necessity of evaluating Milton's capabilities.
OXNARD, California — Joe Milton, the new backup Dallas Cowboys, aims to establish himself as a potential backup after Dak Prescott’s transition from New England Patriots. In his debut game for the Cowboys in the preseason against Los Angeles Rams, Milton completed 17 of 29 passes for 143 yards, one touchdown, and one interception, while also adding 22 yards on the ground.
After the game, trainer Brian Schottenheimer noted that the team needs more time to evaluate Milton's capabilities. "Why should we rush to make a decision today? We don't have to do that today... I need more time to evaluate Joe," Schottenheimer said.
Milton showed both promising and problematic moments, including difficulties with executing simple passes and the desire to make big plays instead of focusing on progress. The team is also evaluating Will Grier, who is a competitor to Milton for the backup position, and his experience could be a significant factor.
The competition between Milton and Grier will continue, especially as the team looks to refine their skills in the preseason games. Both quarterbacks need to showcase their abilities to secure a spot on the regular season roster.
The final decision on who will become the backup to Prescott, which has not been made yet, and upcoming games will show whether Milton can solidify his position or if Grier will emerge as the better option.
