At the meeting of the UN Security Council, which took place on September 10, 2025, the USA and China discussed the issue of the Panama Canal. The USA expressed concern about the influence of China on this important waterway, considering that it may threaten global trade and security. China, in turn, called these allegations unfounded and reminded that the sovereignty of Panama should be respected.

President of Panama José Raúl Mulino emphasized the neutrality of the canal and the right of his country to manage it. He also mentioned the challenges of maritime security, including piracy and transnational crime, which were discussed at the meeting.

The Chinese envoy Fu Cong stated that his country has always regarded the status of the canal as an international waterway and rejected the allegations from the USA, which he called an attempt to justify control over the canal. He also emphasized that the USA is the largest destabilizer in the Pacific region through its military actions.

In a statement after Fu Cong's remarks, US Ambassador Dorothea Shea expressed concern about China's influence on the critical infrastructure of the Panama Canal. She noted that China's actions in the Pacific region pose a threat to maritime security.

Both sides expressed their positions, but Panama remained at the center of the discussion, emphasizing its independence in managing the canal.
