Lawsuit Against Shohei Ohtani Over Real Estate Project in Hawaii

  • Shohei Ohtani and his agent are being sued over a real estate project in Hawaii.
  • Plaintiffs claim that they suffered financial losses.
  • Ohtani is a star in baseball, who signed a record contract with the Dodgers.

An investor in real estate in Hawaii has filed a lawsuit against Shohei Ohtani, the star of the Los Angeles Dodgers, accusing him and his agent Nez Balelo of being involved in a $240 million real estate project on the Big Island of Hawaii. The lawsuit was filed in the Hawaii Circuit Court on Friday.

Along with the lawsuit, Balelo demanded more money from the developer Kevin J. Hays and the real estate agency Tomoko Matsumoto, after previously requiring that their business partner, Kingsbarn Realty Capital, be released from their agreement.

The lawsuit alleges that Ohtani and Balelo, who were involved in the project to enhance his popularity, exploited their fame to undermine the role of the plaintiffs in the project, controlling their own financial interests.

They are accused of improper interference and unjust enrichment. Hays, a developer with 40 years of experience, and Matsumoto, who was supposed to become the sales agent for the properties, claim that Ohtani and Balelo also sought to undermine their interests in the neighboring project.

A representative of Balelo's agency declined to comment on the case. Plaintiffs assert that their dismissal occurred as a result of "coordinated attacks" from Kingsbarn, who recognized that Balelo was seeking dismissal.

Ohtani, 31 years old, known as one of the most famous international stars in baseball, signed a 10-year contract worth $700 million with the Dodgers and aims to help the team win the World Series in 2024.

Materials for the investment project The Vista at Mauna Kea Resort, which remains available online, indicated that Ohtani was referred to as "the Japanese Babe Ruth" and "the first resident," highlighting his role in the project.

This project is the result of 11 years of work by developers, who signed an agreement to collaborate with Ohtani in 2023, hoping to boost demand for real estate among Japanese buyers.
