Trump Plans to Allow Nvidia to Sell Chips in China

  • Trump is considering the possibility of allowing the sale of Nvidia chips in China.
  • Nvidia and AMD will share 15% of the revenue from sales with the U.S. government.
  • The Chinese side has expressed concerns about the export of chips from the U.S.

Donald Trump expressed his intention to allow Nvidia to sell chips in China, which are technically more advanced than those that were previously permitted. This would potentially lift the ban in Washington, given the existing concerns that Beijing could exploit U.S. artificial intelligence capabilities to bolster its military capabilities.

At a briefing on Monday, the president noted that there may be an "agreement" with Nvidia for the sale of a reduced version of its Blackwell chip in China. This could open the door for China to obtain more powerful computational resources from the U.S., critics believe.

Trump stated that Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, "will come back to me on this issue, but it will not be an improved version of the main chip."

This move has sparked concerns in Washington, where politicians from both parties are seeking to restrict China from advancing its technology capabilities. Nvidia chips are a major driving force in this industry, and they actively seek to obtain resources from both the U.S. and China.

Trump also highlighted an agreement under which Nvidia and AMD will share 15% of the revenue from chip sales in China with the U.S. government. This agreement could bring in an additional $3 billion in revenue for the government.

Recently, Nvidia received a permit to resume shipments of its H20 chips, which had previously been banned, indicating a shift in the political landscape of export control.

The Chinese side has already stated that it continuously reinforces its position regarding the export of chips from the U.S., accusing Washington of trying "maliciously to restrain and suppress China."
