President of South Korea Lee Jae-myung will visit Washington on September 25 for a meeting with President Donald Trump. The meeting will take place as part of discussions on trade and cooperation in the context of threats from the nuclear North Korea.
This meeting will be a continuation of the July agreement, under which the USA reduced tariffs on imports from South Korea from 25% to 15% and applied a reduced tariff to South Korean automobiles. South Korea also agreed to purchase energy from the USA for a total of $100 billion and invest $350 billion.
The meeting will take place in the context of discussions in Seoul on possible changes in traditional alliances, as the Trump administration may demand increased spending on the maintenance of American troops in South Korea. Lee and Trump will discuss strengthening the allied position against growing threats from North Korea and the development of strategic partnership in a changing international environment.
According to experts, such changes may lead to South Korea taking on greater responsibility for countering threats from North Korea, while the USA focuses more on China.
