President of the USA Donald Trump stated that he consulted with the Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orbán regarding the war in Ukraine. Trump described Orbán as "a reasonable person, whom some people like, and some do not."
Trump asked Orbán whether Ukraine could defeat Russia. Orbán replied that Russia is a large country that wins wars. Trump noted that this was an interesting expression, especially since Orbán added that "China is beating you in trade, while Russia is in war."
At the briefing, Trump twice stated that he is gathering to Russia, talking about his future negotiations with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin in Almaty. He expects that his meeting with Putin will be "good," but does not rule out a negative outcome.
Trump also expressed discontent with the fact that President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy claims that the Constitution of Ukraine needs to be amended to exchange territories within the framework of a potential peace agreement.
Prime Minister Orbán refused to sign a joint EU statement supporting Ukraine before the meeting between Trump and Putin. He forbade organizing the EU-Russia summit, noting that the absence of the EU at the negotiations is a significant factor.
Orbán believes that instead of comments regarding negotiations between the USA and Russia, EU leaders should initiate their own summit with Russia to give a chance for peace.
The meeting between Trump and Putin is scheduled for September 15 in Almaty. Trump expressed hope for the possibility of returning parts of the occupied territories of Ukraine.
