Changes in Obamacare Could Result in Millions Losing Coverage

  • Nearly 10 million people could lose health coverage over the next decade.
  • Changes to Medicaid could lead to the loss of coverage for 7.5 million individuals.
  • Prices for ACA plans are projected to increase by 18% in 2026.

According to the new report from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), more than 10 million people could lose health coverage over the next decade due to new legislation signed by President Donald Trump.

The new law, known as "Tax Cuts and Jobs Act", introduces new work requirements for Medicaid recipients and ends additional support for Affordable Care Act (ACA) plans. This could result in significant reductions in state health coverage.

According to CBO projections, 7.5 million individuals could lose Medicaid coverage due to stringent requirements. With new rules for adults, who do not have disabilities, must work, volunteer, or be in training to receive benefits. States are also required to verify whether individuals remain qualified for benefits twice a year.

In addition, CBO forecasts that 2.1 million Americans could lose coverage through the ACA, and another 400,000 individuals may be uninsured due to the unintended consequences of the new law.

The expiration of enhanced ACA tax credits, which were introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, could further worsen the situation. If Congress does not find a solution, prices for ACA plans could rise by more than 75%.

Insurance companies are already preparing for an increase in prices by 18% in 2026, which will be the largest increase since 2018.

Experts in the health care sector urge lawmakers to reconsider these cuts and maintain ACA support to prevent larger coverage losses. With millions of individuals at risk of losing medical assistance, discussions on how to make health care fair and accessible will become increasingly crucial in upcoming elections.
