Epic Games Wins Case in Australian Court Against Apple and Google
- Epic Games has won a partial victory in court against Apple and Google.
- The court found that the companies are abusing their market dominance.
- Fortnite will return to iOS in Australia through the Epic Games Store.
The developer of the game Fortnite, Epic Games, has obtained a partial victory in the Australian federal court against Apple and Google. The court determined that restrictions in their stores are anti-competitive.
Epic Games filed a lawsuit against Apple and Google over restrictions related to payments in apps and the prohibition on alternative distribution methods. In 2020, Fortnite was removed from both platforms after Epic attempted to bypass their commission systems by implementing its own payment system.
Judge Jonathan Beach found that Apple is abusing its market dominance by preventing third-party developers from using alternative payment methods. Similar findings were made regarding Google, which also faced criticism for its practices in the Google Play store.
Epic Games announced that Fortnite will return to iOS in Australia through the Epic Games Store, but the exact date has not yet been specified. The company considers this decision significant for developers and consumers.
Although the court recognized violations, Epic did not achieve success in all of its demands. The court's decisions, which exceed 900 pages, have not been published in full, and details will be elaborated in upcoming hearings.
Representatives from Apple and Google expressed disagreement with parts of the court's ruling but confirmed that they will continue to work on improving their platforms.
