New Rules for the America’s Cup Announced with Participation of Women
- In 2027, teams in the America’s Cup must include women.
- Each crew member must be a sixth member of the team - a celebrity or representative of the media.
- Team expenses will be limited to 75 million euros to reduce spending.
The new rules for the America’s Cup, announced on August 12, 2025, are considered significant for the history of the event. In the 38th America’s Cup, which will take place in Naples, Italy, in July 2027, teams will consist of five members, including at least one woman. Along with the new criteria, which require at least two crew members to be women, teams must also include local residents representing the team.
Each 76-foot boat in the America’s Cup will also have a sixth "guest" on board, who can be a celebrity, influential person, or media representative. The Cup will now take place every two years, and the new rules will establish a management system in which all teams must have equal responsibility for organizing the event.
Most crew functions will now be determined by battery power, not by the physical strength of the crew. These changes have received a positive reaction from participants and key stakeholders.
Teams have agreed on a spending limit of 75 million euros for each team participating in the Cup. Teams that convert from the previous Cup must also retain their hulls, while new teams must either adapt the AC75 hull or build a new one according to the same specifications.
These changes have been described as a "landmark moment" for the America’s Cup, particularly for its transformation into a more inclusive and financially sustainable event, which emphasizes the importance of the new management model.
