Retailers will cover the costs of electronic waste disposal

  • Retailers will cover the costs of electronic waste disposal.
  • Online retailers will have to report on the sales of electronics in Great Britain.
  • A new category in retail will contribute to improving the ecological situation.

In Great Britain, new rules have been introduced, under which certain retailers will have to cover the costs of disposing of their products. Ministers announced these changes, aiming to highlight the importance of a circular consumption culture and reduce the amount of electronic waste.

Along with the new requirements, online trading platforms, such as Amazon and eBay, will now be required to register with the Agency for the Protection of the Environment and report on the sales of electronics to consumers in Great Britain. This data will be used to calculate the amount that needs to be paid for financing the disposal of electronic goods.

According to estimates, over 100,000 tons of electronics are discarded in Great Britain annually. The new rules aim to increase investment in disposal and recycling of electronic waste, which also includes a new category for retailers, which will now be recognized as separate types of electronic waste.

Minister for the Environment, Mery Craig, noted that these changes will help level the playing field for British businesses that already do not bear the costs of disposal, and create a more equitable competitive environment. She emphasized the importance of transitioning to a circular economy, in which electronics can be reused longer.

Companies, such as Currys, positively assessed the new initiatives, emphasizing the need for shared responsibility for the disposal of electronic waste. Along with the new rules, online retailers will start collecting fees from January 2026.

Scott Butler, executive director of the organization Material Focus, also supported the new rules, stating that this will help ensure fair contributions from retailers in the disposal of their products for recycling.
