Russian troops have launched a rapid attack on the positions of Ukrainian forces in the Donetsk region, particularly near the cities of Pokrovsk and Dobropillya. According to Ukrainian officials and monitoring groups, small groups of Russian troops have penetrated Ukrainian defensive lines, which complicates the situation for Ukraine.
As of September 5, 2025, Russian forces have advanced to the north towards Dobropillya, located approximately 20 kilometers from Pokrovsk. This attack is taking place ahead of a scheduled meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which will occur in Almaty on Friday.
Although Ukrainian officials have recognized that their defenses have been breached, they clarified that this concerns only small groups of troops and does not indicate that Russia controls the territory. Commanders of Ukrainian forces warn about the weakening of defenses, noting that the frontline has practically become non-existent.
Recent data from open sources indicate that Russian troops have advanced 10 kilometers in the northern direction, which could become a serious problem for Kyiv if it is not halted. Experts suggest that the tactics of small groups of Russian troops could lead to further territorial gains if Ukrainian forces cannot organize effective defenses.
