Google launches the ability to select preferred sources for news

  • Users can select their favorite news sites for display in search results.
  • The feature is available to all users in the USA and India.
  • The capability may limit access to different sources.

This is reported by TechCrunch, The Verge.

Google is introducing a new feature called "Preferred Sources," which allows users to select their favorite news sites and blogs for display in the "Top Stories" section during searches. This feature is available to users in the USA and India.

When users perform a search on a specific topic, they will see a "star" icon next to the "Top Stories" section. By clicking on this icon, they can add sources, searching for them in the list. After selecting the sources, they can refresh the results to see more content from the chosen sources. Google also notes that for some queries, users may see a separate section "From Your Sources" under Top Stories.

This feature allows users to receive information from their preferred sources, but it may also lead to a curation of information bubbles, limiting access to different perspectives on a specific topic. The "Preferred Sources" feature initially tested on an experimental basis, and more than half of users during testing selected four or more sources.

Now the company is making this feature available to all users who conduct searches in English in the USA and India.
