London (AP) — The Pope turned to Pope Leo XIII with a plea to send aid to Gaza and "bring light to the children, before it is too late." He publicly shared his appeal on social media, noting that the day of his son Rocco's birth coincided with this call.
In her message, she wrote: "Children of the world belong to all. You are the only one who cannot be denied in the face of adversity. We need humanitarian corridors to be fully opened for the rescue of these innocent children. Time is running out. Please, say that you will help. With love, the Pope."
According to medical data, after three weeks of blockade and instability in Gaza, children who previously had no access to food are beginning to starve due to the blockade. The United Nations organization reported that in April of this year, over 5,000 children were diagnosed with starvation, although this number is likely underestimated. Previously, starvation was practically nonexistent.
The Pope recently again called for the urgent end of the blockade in Gaza, indicating the necessity of maintaining humanitarian rights and the protection of civilian populations. He emphasized that "everyone is suffering," including mothers and guardians.
According to the Ministry of Health of Gaza, since the beginning of the war, the number of starvation cases has surpassed 227 individuals, of whom 103 are children. Israel denies that a famine is taking place in Gaza, blaming Hamas for the alleged humanitarian crisis.
