New Documents Released About the Shooting at Uvalde School
- The published documents reveal the life of the shooter before the tragedy.
- Criticism of police for their delayed response during the attack continues.
- Investigations revealed problems in training and communication of law enforcement.
Uvalde, Texas, became the site of one of the deadliest shootings in U.S. history, where on May 24, 2022, 19 students and two teachers were killed at Robb School. Recently, new documents were published, totaling 1,500 pages, which include electronic communications, text messages, and records about the shooter, Salvador Ramos.
Ramos, who was 18 years old at the time of the attack, was previously considered "uniquely gifted" in preschool. However, his reputation deteriorated in middle school due to bullying and low academic performance. He left school in June 2021 due to poor performance and absenteeism.
Investigations showed that nearly 376 officers waited more than 77 minutes before engaging with the shooter. Criticism was directed at their slow response, as well as at the police leadership, which failed to manage the crisis situation effectively.
Among the new documents is also a recording from police body cameras, which indicates that they could not see the shooter, who was barricaded in a classroom with children. The parents of the victims, media organizations, and community representatives demanded the release of these materials, which became possible after court rulings.
