On September 12, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump will meet with European leaders and the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky at a virtual summit, organized by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. This meeting precedes Trump's summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which will take place on Friday.
The main goal of the virtual summit is to discuss possible options for pressure on Russia, issues related to occupied territories by Russia, and guarantees of security for Kyiv. European leaders have expressed their concern regarding possible territorial concessions by Ukraine within the framework of a ceasefire agreement, which may include a demand for withdrawal from part of the territories.
At the meeting, British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will also be present, along with other members of the Coalition of the Willing, which supports Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. EU leaders urged Trump to protect their security interests, emphasizing that the path to peace in Ukraine cannot be envisioned without Ukraine's participation.
During the preparation for the meeting, the European Union and its members have expressed readiness for possible negative consequences if negotiations between Trump and Putin do not yield expected results. EU leaders stressed that international borders should not be altered by force, and Ukraine has the right to assert its own territory.
