Texas Republicans Plan New Session for Redistricting
- Texas Republicans are planning a new session for redistricting.
- Democrats have left the state to block changes to the districts.
- Protests against Republican plans will take place across the state.
Texas Republican leaders have announced their intention to hold a new special session for considering the redistricting, should Democrats not return to the legislative body by Friday. This session is part of the agenda of President Donald Trump, aimed at obtaining additional seats for Republicans in the U.S. Congress.
Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives Dade Phelan confirmed that if a quorum is not achieved, Governor Greg Abbott will call a new session. In the upcoming session, issues of redistricting, assistance to the displaced, and other important matters will be discussed, but Democrats have left the state to block changes in the districts.
Abbott noted that the new session will have the same agenda as the previous one, with the possibility of adding new points. He also stated that they will continue to call sessions until the "agenda of priority tasks for Texas" is adopted.
Changes in the districts may lead to obtaining additional five seats for Republicans in Congress, which is important for maintaining their majority in the chamber. Democrats, for their part, are planning protest actions against these measures, which will take place throughout the state.
Along with this information, the governor also emphasized that if Democrats return to Texas, they will be barred and delivered to the Capitol.
