A New Species of Dinosaur with Powerful Arms Discovered

  • A new species of dinosaur Shri rapax has been discovered in Mongolia.
  • This species had large, strong arms for grabbing larger prey.
  • The fossils date back approximately 75-72 million years ago.

Recently, a new species of dinosaur was identified in Mongolia, which has been named Shri rapax. This species belongs to the group of theropod dinosaurs and is known for its large and "powerful" arms, which provide new insights into the evolution of birds.

The fossil of Shri rapax was dated to approximately 75-72 million years ago and was likely discovered in Gobi. However, the exact location of the find remains unknown since the specimen was illegally excavated in 2010 and later preserved in private collections in Japan and England, prior to being acquired by the French company Eldonia.

Scientists believe that the specimen may belong to the form of Dromaeosauridae, known for its numerous large clawed dinosaurs. In Shri rapax, unusual features of the claw and thumb have been identified, as well as powerful arms, which had "very thick" large thumb and proportionally larger claws than in other dromaeosaurids.

This dinosaur likely preyed on larger animals, such as ceratopsians, which testify to its adaptation. Researchers believe that the interactions with ceratopsians could explain the evolution of larger forelimbs and hands in some dromaeosaurids.
