Grigor Dimitrov withdraws from the US Open due to grass court injury
- Grigor Dimitrov withdrew from the US Open due to injury.
- This is the fifth consecutive Grand Slam tournament that he has not finished.
- Alexander Tabilo will replace Dimitrov in the tournament.
New York — Three-time Grand Slam semifinalist Grigor Dimitrov withdrew from the US Open in the first round, due to an injury sustained three weeks after he first injured his chest and was forced to retire from a match against Yannik Sinner at Wimbledon.
Exiting from the All England Club on July 7 — Dimitrov won the first two sets against Sinner, but suffered an injury in the third — he became the fifth player in the Grand Slam tournament, on which the 34-year-old Dimitrov could not finish the match. This also happened at the Australian Open in January, at the French Open on grass, and also at last year's Wimbledon and the US Open.
In the first round in New York, Dimitrov lost, leading 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 4-1 to Frances Tiafoe in the quarterfinals.
Dimitrov was a semifinalist at the US Open in 2019, at the Australian Open in 2017, and at Wimbledon in 2014.
His highest ranking was No. 3; currently, he is ranked 21st.
With Dimitrov's absence, Alexander Tabilo gets a place in the men's singles tournament, which starts on August 24.
Brendon Holt becomes the next player to replace him, who is set to compete in the qualifying rounds, should another tennis player withdraw. Holt defeated Taylor Fritz at Flushing Meadows in 2022, and his mother — two-time US Open champion Tracy Austin.
