Heavy rains in Mexico have caused the suspension of flights at Mexico City airport

  • The Mexico City airport has been closed due to heavy rains for the second day already.
  • More than 20,000 passengers have been stranded due to delays and cancellations.
  • The flooding has sparked criticism regarding the infrastructure of the city government.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Heavy rains have forced the main airport in Mexico City to suspend flights for several hours for the second day in a row, causing chaos at one of the busiest airports in Latin America.

Images from the airport show one of the heaviest rainy seasons in Mexico's history for many years, which has led to persistent flooding in other parts of the city.

After the suspension of all flights for at least four hours on Thursday morning, aviation authorities reported that they managed to resume operations of one of the runways, but most of them remained inactive.

Approximately 20,000 passengers have been stranded due to flight cancellations, delays, and rerouting, according to the airport.

Passengers report numerous cancellations and delays this week, as heavy rains continue to fall on the city.

69-year-old Alicia Nikanor said that her scheduled flight to the northern city of Tijuana was canceled, and when she returned to the airport Thursday morning, the flight had also not taken place.

The mayor of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, reported that the heavy rains on Thursday flooded the main square of the city, known as Zocalo, covering more than 3 feet in 20 minutes, which set a record, established in 1952.

Videos from the southern part of the city show floating cars on flooded streets, which have turned into rivers, even becoming objects of internet memes.

This flooding has sparked criticism from some residents of the city, who believe that it indicates larger problems with the infrastructure from the city government.
