In mid-2023, David Petrou, a former Google engineer, founded the startup Continua, which utilizes artificial intelligence to enhance interactions in group chats.

On September 12, 2025, Continua announced the raising of $8 million in a funding round led by GV. The investors also included Bessemer Venture Partners and several angel investors.

Continua aims to integrate AI agents into group chats on SMS, iMessage, and Discord, to reduce chaos during communication. Petrou notes that many people often copy information from ChatGPT or other models, and then paste it into their conversations. Continua allows the AI agent to participate in discussions, providing relevant information at the right moment.

The AI agent can automatically create reminders, initiate polls, and generate documents, simplifying event planning and organizing joint projects. Users can interact with the agent, asking it for details or requesting it to stop when it intrudes too often.

Petrou emphasizes that implementing AI in conversations with several people is a complex technical challenge, as most AI models are designed for interactions between one person and a machine. Continua has adapted its technology to account for the dynamics of group discussions.

Along with polling, 66% of Americans feel overwhelmed in group chats. Continua aims to address this problem by providing users the ability to focus on important matters, enhancing the effectiveness of conversations and reducing stress.
