Mexican-American designer Willie Chavarria received criticism for his new "Oaxaca Slip-On" sandal model, released by Adidas, following calls for accountability in cultural appropriation. This model, which recalls traditional huarache sandals, was created without the involvement of representatives from indigenous communities in the state of Oaxaca.

In his statement, Chavarria noted that his goal was to honor the cultural heritage of Oaxaca. However, he acknowledged that the design was not developed in close collaboration with local communities, which is an important aspect for honoring their cultural heritage.

Adidas also reiterated its commitment, highlighting the importance of working with indigenous communities in an ongoing dialogue. They recognized that the sandals reflect the richness of the cultural heritage of Mexican indigenous peoples.
