Oklahoma Student John Maytire Denies Allegations of Gambling on Sports

  • John Maytire denies allegations of gambling on sports.
  • The University of Oklahoma has not commented on possible investigations.
  • NCAA is studying issues of sports betting among student-athletes.

This is reported by NBC News, Marca, Marca.

John Maytire, the new quarterback at the University of Oklahoma, is under scrutiny after screenshots of his personal Venmo account surfaced on social media, showing transactions labeled as "sports bets." These transactions, which took place on November 20, 2022, when Maytire was still attending Washington University, were sent to a friend associated with his former team, Richardm Roaten.

Despite NCAA's strict prohibition against student-athletes engaging in sports betting, Maytire issued a statement denying any wrongdoing, asserting that these were "internal bets with friends." The University of Oklahoma has yet to comment on possible investigations.

Recently, NCAA has been exploring the issue of sports betting among student-athletes, particularly as the number of problems related to this issue has increased. In 2023, nearly 27% of educational institutions affiliated with Division I reported issues related to betting among their athletes.

In connection with this, NCAA announced in June 2025 its intention to revise certain rules regarding betting, proposing to allow student-athletes and staff to bet on professional sports.
