Increase in Prices in the USA Following the Dismissal of the Commissioner of Statistics
- Prices in the USA rose by 2.7% in July due to Trump's tariffs.
- The dismissal of the BLS commissioner sparked concerns among economists.
- The new BLS commissioner proposes to review the data on job openings.
In the USA, prices continued to rise in July, which was a consequence of Donald Trump's tariff policy. According to the Consumer Price Index (CPI), prices increased by 2.7% compared to the previous year. This occurred following reports of a weak increase in job openings, which led to the dismissal of Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Commissioner Eric Makentarf.
Data on job openings, released on September 1, indicated that only 73,000 new jobs were created in July, while previous data for May and June were significantly revised down to 258,000 jobs. Following this, Trump dismissed Makentarf, accusing him of falsifying data, although he did not provide evidence for this.
Economists note that the tariffs imposed by Trump began to affect consumer goods prices. They point out that the increase in prices may be a result of companies starting to pass on costs to consumers. It is emphasized that regardless of the stability of the overall inflation rate, core inflation, which excludes energy and food products, rose by 3.1% in July.
After the dismissal of Makentarf, the acting BLS commissioner, William Vitravski, emphasized the importance of accurate data for the economy. He urged employees to continue their work, stressing the importance of their mission.
Trump also announced plans to appoint a new BLS commissioner, E.J. Antonie, who expressed the need to address the significant discrepancies in the monthly job opening reports due to their inaccuracy.
