Watch the Perseid meteor shower in 2025
- Observations of the Perseids will be enhanced by the bright moonlight.
- It is recommended to observe from 2:00 to 4:00 AM.
- However, there is still a possibility of witnessing cosmic events.
This is reported by ABC News, Marca.
The Perseid meteor shower, which is considered one of the brightest celestial displays of the year, will reach its peak activity on the night of August 12 to 13, 2025. However, this year, observations will be enhanced by the bright moonlight, which may reduce the number of visible meteors.
According to NASA expert Bill Cooke, this month the moon will be in the waxing gibbous phase, illuminating about 84% of the night sky. This leads to a significant decrease in the number of visible meteors from 40-50 to 10-20 per hour. This is especially true for observations from urban or illuminated areas.
Nevertheless, for those who still want to try to catch a glimpse of the Perseids, NASA recommends observing from 2:00 to 4:00 AM, when the sky will be darkest. It is important to find a location away from artificial lights, to have a direct view of the moon and to allow time to adjust to the darkness for about 30 minutes.
The Perseids originate from the debris of comet Swift-Tuttle, which burns up in the atmosphere, creating bright streaks. Regardless of the light conditions, there is still a possibility of witnessing a large number of meteors in the night sky.
NASA does not discourage observing the Perseids, but advises reducing expectations, since visibility will be limited. For a more impressive experience, it is worth waiting for other meteor showers, such as the Geminids in December, when conditions for observation will be more favorable.
