The shark was sighted in the area of Crescent Beach State Park, near Higgins Beach and Pine Point, which is just a few miles from Portland. Commercial fisherman David Lancaster managed to photograph the shark and described it as "beautiful", although it was not very common.

White sharks, which have become popular thanks to the film "Jaws", are not an ordinary sight in the waters of Maine, but they tend to linger here longer. Over the past few years, the number of sightings has increased, and some scientists believe that the growing population of seals in the state may be causing increased shark activity. White sharks live in marine environments, such as seals.
