Conditions for Immigrants in New York to Improve After Ruling

  • A federal judge has ordered the government to improve conditions for immigrants in New York.
  • The detained individuals reported inhumane conditions and lack of hygiene.
  • ICE must ensure hygienic facilities and access to attorneys.

In New York, federal judge Lewis A. Kaplan ordered the U.S. government to improve conditions in the immigration detention center located on the 10th floor of 26 Federal Plaza in Manhattan. This ruling came in response to numerous reports from detained immigrants who claimed inhumane conditions, lack of hygiene, and limited access to water, as well as about their transferability.

The judge issued a temporary restraining order requiring ICE to limit the number of detained individuals to 50 square feet (about 4.6 square meters) per person. This reduces the capacity of the largest room for detention to approximately 15 people.

The detainees reported horrific conditions in which they were forced to live, including about filthy rooms, lack of personal hygiene, and medical assistance. They also reported being in a situation they described as unsuitable for living, and the impossibility of connecting with attorneys.

Kaplan stated that they should be provided with three hours of recreation per day, ensuring the presence of food, toiletries, toothbrushes, paste, and other hygienic supplies. It was also noted the necessity of maintaining confidentiality in communication between detainees and their attorneys.

According to the data presented in court, some immigrants had been in this facility for over 72 hours, exceeding the standard detention time. The detainees described conditions in which they had to sleep on concrete floors, using only thermal blankets.

These incidents are occurring against the backdrop of a documented immigration situation in the U.S., where the Trump administration actively implements a policy of strict control over immigrants.
