New York Mayor's Race: Mamdani Leads Cuomo by 19 Points
- Zokhran Mamdani is leading in the polls for the New York mayoral election
- Andrew Cuomo proposes a law to restrict rental properties for married couples
- Super candidates are actively discussing critical issues regarding housing policy
In the New York mayoral election, which will take place in November 2025, Democratic Socialist Zokhran Mamdani leads over former governor Andrew Cuomo by 19 percentage points, according to the latest poll from the Siena Institute. Mamdani has the support of 44% of voters, while Cuomo receives 25%. At the same time, Republican Elise Stefanik is reducing the gap with Democrat Kathy Hochul in the race for the gubernatorial seat.
Mamdani seeks strong backing among young voters, positioning himself against Cuomo among Black and Jewish voters. However, Mamdani is actively conducting a campaign, having launched a week-long tour called "Five Districts Against Trump," which draws attention to threats that, in his view, come from the presidential administration.
Cuomo, on the other hand, criticizes Mamdani for his stance on housing and accessibility. He opposed a proposed bill that would prohibit "married" renters from occupying stable rent-controlled apartments. This bill, known as the "Mamdani Law," has raised concerns among housing experts, who assert that such an initiative could lead to problems in the rental market.
Cuomo also claims that Mamdani intends to maintain his stable rent-controlled apartment, as, in his view, this place could be occupied by a homeless family. This attack has become popular on social media and has raised questions about access to stable rent-controlled units, which make up approximately 40% of New York's housing fund.
