The National Guard of the USA has started to appear on the streets of Washington following President Donald Trump's order to deploy them. This came after his statement about the rising violent crime in the city being out of control. It is expected that up to 800 National Guard troops will be deployed, along with 500 federal law enforcement officers.
Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser, a representative of the Democratic Party, condemns that crime in the city is critical, calling the deployment of troops "authoritarian overreach." Trump also threatened similar measures for other cities controlled by Democrats, such as New York and Chicago.
Guardsmen began to appear in the city center, setting up barricades near government buildings. 23 individuals were arrested by federal agents, who assist the local police, for various crimes, including homicides and drug trafficking. Press secretary of the White House, Karine Jean-Pierre, stated that this is just the beginning of a large-scale campaign against crime.
Mayor Bowser stated that they will cooperate with federal agencies but emphasized the importance of maintaining local police control. She stressed that the goal is to reduce crime but indicated that the data on crime shows a decrease in violent crime in Washington.
The conflict between Trump and Bowser's administration has been ongoing for some time, and now the situation escalates due to the president's decision to activate the National Guard. Investigations show that crime in Washington has decreased to its lowest level in 30 years, regardless of the president's statements.
