The AI startup Perplexity has made an unsolicited proposal of $34.5 billion for the Chrome browser, which belongs to Alphabet Inc. In a letter to Sundar Pichai, the head of Google, Perplexity stated that the transition of Chrome to an independent operator, which will not store user data, will be beneficial for society.

Google is facing increased scrutiny from antitrust authorities due to its dominant position in the search engine market and online advertising. In September 2025, a federal judge may issue a ruling that could require Google to separate its search business.

Perplexity, which was valued at $18 billion in July, also launched the Comet browser, which utilizes artificial intelligence. It intends to retain Google as a search system for data storage in Chrome, but users will be able to modify the settings.

Perplexity did not disclose how it plans to finance this deal, but it claims that several funds are ready to fully finance the transaction. Many experts believe that Google is unlikely to agree to the sale of Chrome, as it is critically important for its strategy in the field of artificial intelligence.

At the same time, Perplexity has already tried to acquire TikTok in the USA to resolve issues related to Chinese ownership. According to analysts, if Google agrees to the sale, it could be related to legal obligations to prevent this.
