The Government of Lagos has banned single-use plastic

  • Lagos has banned the use of single-use plastic products starting from July 1, 2024.
  • Many stores continue to sell single-use plastic despite the ban.
  • Countries are holding talks on a global agreement to combat plastic pollution.

LAGOS, Nigeria — In Lagos, one of the most polluted places in the world, the government has imposed a ban on single-use plastic products. This law will take effect on July 1, 2024, but its enforcement raises concerns due to the lack of effective control and alternatives for local residents.

Lagos, home to over 20 million people, generates nearly 13,000 tons of waste daily, of which approximately five percent is plastic. Many of these waste products end up in water bodies, polluting beaches and contributing to flooding.

Despite the ban, some stores continue to sell plastic packaging. Officials believe that the absence of an existing waste management system also exacerbates the situation.

At the international level, in Geneva, countries, including Nigeria, are holding discussions on a global agreement to tackle plastic pollution. However, last year these negotiations faced setbacks due to the opposition of oil-producing countries that do not wish to limit plastic production.

Experts emphasize the need for changes in public awareness and the development of alternative solutions to make the ban on single-use plastic effective. Producers should also take responsibility for the plastic they produce.
