Hackers from Russia Breached the Federal Court Filing System of the USA

The electronic filing system of federal courts in the USA has been breached, in which, according to The New York Times, Russian hackers are suspected. This incident was discovered at the beginning of September 2025 and involves confidential materials, which contain data about informants in criminal cases.

According to the investigation, the hackers were looking for documents related to criminal cases in New York and other places, including cases that mentioned individuals with Russian and Eastern European names. Court administrators informed the US Department of Justice that the system had been compromised by "modern cybercriminals" and had been temporarily closed to remove sensitive documents.

According to the data, the attacks began at the beginning of July. In connection with this breach, courts in the USA have implemented additional security measures. For example, in the Eastern District of New York, the main court has prohibited the uploading of confidential documents to the general PACER database. These files will now be stored on a separate server.

The US government is currently trying to assess the scale of the breach and mitigate the risks in computer networks, which are considered a potential method for foreign adversaries. It is noted that earlier it was reported that Ukraine had become an easy target for Russian hackers due to the reduced support from the USA in the field of cybersecurity.
