Typhoon Podul Closes Schools and Cancels Flights in Taiwan

  • Typhoon Podul has closed schools and canceled hundreds of flights.
  • More than 5,500 people have been evacuated from unsafe areas.
  • Heavy rainfall and possible landslides are forecasted.

Typhoon Podul made landfall in Taiwan on Wednesday, September 13, 2025, causing significant damage in the southeastern coastal region. The storm reached speeds of 191 km/h, leading to the closure of schools and government institutions in nine cities and counties, including Taichung and Taiwan. The government has urged residents to evacuate from unsafe areas.

The typhoon reached the coast near Taitung around 1:00 PM (0500 GMT) and is moving towards the north, expected to weaken after passing through the Central Mountain Range. It is forecasted that rainfall could reach 600 mm in mountainous areas, increasing the risk of flooding and landslides.

A total of 252 domestic and 129 international flights have been canceled, primarily from Kaohsiung and Taiwan airports. More than 5,500 people have already been evacuated from affected territories.

Typhoons often cause damage to agricultural sectors, especially fruit and other cultural crops, which may suffer from flooding and strong winds. The government is already preparing teams for restoring electricity and repairing roads in the event of new damages.
