Monika Seles, a nine-time Grand Slam champion, revealed that three years ago she was diagnosed with a rare disease - autoimmune hepatitis, which affects the liver. She decided to openly discuss her illness to raise awareness about this rare condition ahead of the start of the Open Championship in the USA, which begins on August 24.
Seles first noticed the symptoms of the disease approximately five years ago. "I was playing with kids or relatives and missed my shot. I thought: 'Yes, I see two balls.' These, undoubtedly, are symptoms that cannot be ignored," she said in an interview with the Associated Press.
The athlete stressed that the illness significantly impacts her daily life. She noted that it took her a long time to accept her diagnosis and start talking about it publicly. According to Seles, this is a serious topic, but she hopes that her story helps others.
Seles also spoke about her difficulties in adapting to a new way of life. "I had to go through a number of 'jarring experiences' in my life," she noted, comparing her diagnosis to other challenges, such as the attack she suffered during the tournament in Hamburg in 1993. She emphasized that she continues to work on herself and adapt to new conditions.
Currently, Seles collaborates with the company argenx, which specializes in immunology, to promote the "Go for Greater" campaign and draw attention to autoimmune hepatitis, for which there is currently no treatment available.
