IAEA Confirms Absence of Radiation Threat After Fire

  • MAGATE confirmed that the fire did not affect the radiation background.
  • The fire was observed on September 12 near the cooling tower of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant.
  • Incidents with fires at the Zaporizhzhya NPP are becoming regular.

This was reported by RBC Ukraine, Ukrinform.

The international agency for atomic energy (MAGATE) reported that the fire near the cooling towers of the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant did not influence the level of radiation. According to the words of MAGATE's director general Rafael Grossi, during the incident, no increase in radiation background was recorded, and there were no injuries either.

On September 12, 2025, photographs appeared showing smoke near the cooling tower of the Zaporizhzhya NPP. The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine reported that at this moment, the exact location of the fire and its possible consequences are being clarified.

This incident is not the first for the Zaporizhzhya NPP. On July 19, 2025, smoke was observed through the trees near the cooling tower of the station. In addition, on July 29, information about a possible increase in radiation in the region was reported after a change in wind direction. However, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine confirmed this data, stating that no increase in radiation background was recorded.

MAGATE employees monitored the situation from the administrative building of the station. It was also noted that constant fires in the territory of the Zaporizhzhya NPP have become systemic. For example, on September 11, 2024, a fire destroyed the cooling tower No. 1 of the technical water supply system.
