Trump announces laureates award in Kennedy Center
- Trump announces laureates award at the Kennedy Center on September 13.
- He oversees the center from July, replacing the previous administration.
- A change in programming and possible renaming of the center is being planned.
President Donald Trump will be at the Kennedy Center in the middle of September 13, where he will announce the first laureates award since he took over the control of the establishment. This visit takes place at a time when Trump is trying to gain more influence over cultural institutions in Washington.
Trump, who became the new head of the center in July, is previously noted to be monitoring public reactions on social media, in which he hints at a possible name change for the center. He stated that the center will restore its former glory, referring to "great nominees for the Kennedy Center award."
The Kennedy Center plans to present a new list of laureates, among which will be well-known personalities, such as "an icon of country music, an English rock group from New York, a dance choreographer, and a billionaire actor." Trump hopes that his management style will positively influence the activities of the center.
During his second term, Trump actively intervenes in the management of the center, replacing members of the previous administration with his own appointees and demanding a review of the program of events, including excluding performances with artists in drag costumes.
This initiative has become part of a broader strategy of Trump, aimed at increasing his influence in the Democratic-oriented Washington, including through control over cultural institutions that previously remained outside of politics.
Trump also hinted at the possibility of renaming the Kennedy Center to "Donald Trump's Center for Performing Arts," although this proposal has so far not received support.
