Wildfires in Europe, particularly in Greece, Spain, Turkey, and Albania, continue to cause significant damage. On September 13, 2025, in Greece, rescuers are trying to contain numerous fires threatening populated areas near the city of Patras and on tourist islands. According to local media, thousands of people have been evacuated, while dozens of hotels have been closed due to smoke inhalation.
In Greece, nearly 5,000 rescuers are supported by 33 aircraft. The fires have already destroyed buildings, farms, and factories, forcing residents to leave their homes. The government has declared a high risk of fires in most parts of the country due to extreme weather, with temperatures reaching 34 degrees Celsius.
In Spain, where the fires are also causing serious losses, a 35-year-old volunteer firefighter died while attempting to stop a blaze in the Castilla and León region. Nearly 5,000 people have been evacuated, and several fires remain uncontrolled. The Minister of the Environment reported that some fires may be arson-related.
In Albania and Turkey, there are also reports of casualties and devastation. In Albania, as a result of the fire, an 80-year-old man died, while in Turkey, a forestry worker died due to an unfortunate incident during firefighting efforts. The Turkish government is already battling fires since the end of June, resulting in 18 fatalities.
