A New Ancient Whale with Teeth Discovered in Australia

  • A new species of ancient whale Janjucetus dullardi has been discovered.
  • The whale lived about 26 million years ago and was a toothed whale.
  • This finding is significant for understanding the evolution of marine mammals.

In the Victorian region of Australia, a new species of ancient whale named Janjucetus dullardi has been discovered. This whale lived approximately 26 million years ago and had special adaptations for swimming, including large eyes and teeth suited for a predatory lifestyle. Research published in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society emphasizes the importance of this discovery for understanding the evolution of marine mammals.

Fragments of a skull, belonging to a young specimen, were found in the coastal area of Fossil Beach in 2019. This species is one of the early ancestors of modern whales and belongs to a group known as the mammalodontids. Researchers indicate that this discovery is crucial for studying the evolution of whales.

Along with the research, Janjucetus dullardi was a compact toothed whale, roughly the size of a dolphin. It had a short snout, large eyes adapted for seeing in the dark, and teeth designed for catching prey. This discovery allows scientists to better understand how early whales adapted to life in the ocean.

This finding is the fourth known species of mammalodontids in the world and the first to preserve detailed teeth and internal structures intact. Researchers plan to study these fragments in more detail to understand how this species oriented itself in the water.

Research confirms that the Victorian region was an important place for studying the evolution of whales, where numerous rare species have been discovered.
