Director of the Rugby Union of Wales Remains in Position Due to Cancer

  • Abbie Turner remains in her position due to a cancer diagnosis
  • Richard Collier-Kay will temporarily lead the union
  • The possibility of reducing the number of professional teams in Wales is being considered

The Executive Director of the Rugby Union of Wales, Abbie Turner, will temporarily retain her position following a cancer diagnosis. She plans to take a break starting September 22 to focus on treatment and recovery.

In her statement, Turner noted: "This was not an easy decision, but I feel it is necessary for me to prioritize my health and recovery." She also expressed gratitude for the support she has received from family, friends, and colleagues.

During her absence, Richard Collier-Kay, the head of the union, will take over the overall leadership. Turner has held this position since January 2024 and has not missed any time in Welsh rugby.

Currently, the Rugby Union is considering the issue of reducing the number of professional teams from four to two, which will also become a key topic for discussion while Turner is absent.

Changes to the structure of professional rugby in Wales are planned to be discussed at the earliest opportunity, with a final decision expected in the autumn.
