Madrid — Montse Tomé, the coach of Spain's women's national team, expressed her surprise after her contract was not extended. She had expected to retain her position after the team reached the Euro 2025 final, but the Spanish Football Federation made the decision to replace her with Sonia Bermúdez.
Tomé, who led the team after Spain's victory at the 2023 World Cup, stated that she was not informed of the reasons behind such a decision. She mentioned that the president of the federation, Rafael Lozano, promised her an extension of the contract in the event of a successful performance at the tournament.
"I am very disappointed, especially since he did not keep his word about the extension. It was difficult to understand everything that happened after the final," Tomé said in an interview with Spanish radio Cadena Ser. She also noted that she was not informed through the usual channels from the players on social media.
The decision to change the coach was made by the members of the federation's board. Tomé was the first woman in this position and received criticism for the absence of players like Jenni Hermoso, but it was emphasized that the decision was based on sporting indicators.
